A SUNNY BEACHY DAY AT BAK BAK BEACH

26th July 2009 (Sunday): Pantai Bak Bak, Kudat. The team (WWF-Kudat) was invited to organize an environmental education activities at SMK Abdul Rahim English camp for SPM students at Pantai Bak Bak, Kudat. We organize an activity called 'Habitat Exploration Activity'. We chose 4 different habitats that can be found adjacent to the camping area (Mangrove, Sandy Beach, Rocky Beach and Coral Reef) to be explored. The activity was designed to develope interest in different type of habitats and organisms living in it; and learning about their dependence on each other. While, the discussion and presentation will teach the students to think critically, work in a team and speak confidently in public in communicating their findings.

Here is how the activity is done: 1) The first stage of the activity is dividing the students to 4 groups. 2) Then, the facilitators (WWF staffs, Volunteers from Banggi and Kudat & the French students) will explain about and ideal habitat profile; the proposed Tun Mustapha Park; & the respective habitat to be explored). 3) Exploration takes about half an hour. 4) Preparation of presentation based on observation of habitat. 5) Presentation.

The activity was a success, thanks to the volunteers from Banggi and Kudat, SMK Abdul Rahim Students; and Howard and his bunch of students and teachers from France!

All in a half-day work!

Besides being a weekend, the trip took a bit of sacrifice as it involved waking up at 5am ! The early departure on the Mameng (WWF’s 10m boat) was so that we could catch the tide and avoid bad waves. By 7:30am , we sped away from Kudat marina and were rewarded by a spectacular sunrise and a good calm sea. With us on the trip were Encik Fazrullah Abdul Razak, Marine Park Manager of Sabah Parks, Encik Jimli Perijin, Wildlife Enforcement Officer of Sabah Wildlife Department, and Encik Amillson Baragus, a consultant for WWF’s alternative livelihood assessment study. Recap on the dugong release Early morning on 15 December 2009, a rarely seen dugong was found in a net by a Bajau fisher within the marine sanctuary in Pulau Maliangin Kecil. It was taken to Pulau Banggi, after members of the newly formed Maliangin Island Community Association called for assistance. WWF Kudat-Banggi PCA Team, with advice from Sabah Wildlife Department, arranged for the dugong’s release back on the same afternoon. The dugong was a female juvenile measuring 1.5 metres. Boikot sajian istimewa sup sirip ikan yu WALAUPUN jam sudah menunjukkan pukul 7 pagi, para pengunjung masih berpusu-pusu memasuki Pasar Borong Selayang, Selangor untuk mendapatkan barangan keperluan harian. Ketika menjengah ke bahagian basah pasar itu, mata penulis tertancap pada sebuah gerai yang melonggokkan beberapa ekor ikan yu atau jerung bersaiz kecil di atas meja untuk dijual. Menurut penjual ikan berusia dalam lingkungan 40-an yang hanya mahu dikenali sebagai Keng itu, ikan yu yang dijual pada harga RM10 sekilogram tersebut dikatakan mempunyai rasa yang enak selain memberi khasiat kepada tubuh manusia. “Ikan yu ini sedap. Semua jenis masakan sesuai seperti masak kari, asam pedas, kicap dan gulai.
