Dialogue between Group 4 of ISC with Communities of Kg. Taritipan and Kg. Langkon Baru.


Group 4 of the Interim Steering Committee for Tun Mustapha Park (TMP) led by the District Office of Kudat, Kota Marudu and Pitas organized a dialogue with communities especially with the fishermen in Kg. Taritipan and Kg. Langkon Baru on the 7 July 2011. Over 50 people attended the dialogue including government agencies and NGO in each dialogue held. The dialogue held intended to update the community on the progress and status of TMP gazettement and also to obtain their feedback on the gazettement of TMP.



Major concerns highlighted by the communities were fate of houses built on coastal areas in untitled land, fate of fishermen whose fishing area are near No-Take Zone, land application, status of gazettement of TMP, and area covered in TMP. The communities appreciate more of such dialogues held in the days to come to provide a platform for the communities to be involved and to be updated with the gazettement of TMP. All in all, they voiced out positive support for the gazettement of TMP with hope that it will benefits them in their livelihood upon gazettement.

Besides being a weekend, the trip took a bit of sacrifice as it involved waking up at 5am ! The early departure on the Mameng (WWF’s 10m boat) was so that we could catch the tide and avoid bad waves. By 7:30am , we sped away from Kudat marina and were rewarded by a spectacular sunrise and a good calm sea. With us on the trip were Encik Fazrullah Abdul Razak, Marine Park Manager of Sabah Parks, Encik Jimli Perijin, Wildlife Enforcement Officer of Sabah Wildlife Department, and Encik Amillson Baragus, a consultant for WWF’s alternative livelihood assessment study. Encik Fazrullah wanted to promote the establishment of the proposed TMP , while Encik Jimli aimed to introduce Sabah Wildlife Department’s Honorary Wildife Warden (HWW) role and recruit participants for the HWW training coming up in March. CROC INCIDENT OFF BALAMBANGAN ISLAND

Posted by: Ishahm Few days ago, when I just got back from a long journey, some friends told me there was a crocodile attack at Balambangan Island. I was not so sure about this news and as always I will be sceptical about the croc stories especially when it comes to Kudat area. I’ve heard stories about crocodile killed man out in the sea and far from the crocodile's ‘wandering area’, but there are no evidence to make my self to believe that croc attack really does happen here, I even asked a police friend few months ago, and he said ‘mana ada kes buaya’. Anyway, the latest incident which happened just last week makes me now believe that those previous attack by crocs were true!
